Martin
Teacher
Martin is a seasoned debate coach and educator who has been guiding students in speech and argumentation since 2010. He has coached learners across multiple formats—including ESDP, WSC, parliamentary debate, and speaking events such as impromptu and extemporaneous competitions. His own journey began as a high school debater, where he competed all four years and qualified for the California State Tournament. Since then, he has continued to share his expertise by sending students to prestigious statewide events like the California Parliamentary State Tournament.

At the heart of Martin’s teaching is the belief that debate is one of the most valuable skills a student can learn. He sees it not only as a way to win tournaments, but as a lifelong practice in critical thinking, clear communication, and confidence. His students are encouraged to engage with both sides of an argument, sharpen their reasoning, and grow steadily over time, skills that carry far beyond the classroom.
Martin studied at College of the Desert in Palm Desert, California, and later expanded his professional experience into the technology field, working with companies such as Facebook and Oculus on AR/VR projects. He also trained in the Facial Action Coding System (FACS), gaining expertise in recognizing subtle expressions and emotional patterns—knowledge that deepens his interest in communication and human interaction.

In addition to his teaching and coaching, Martin is passionate about literature and history, often drawing on classic works to inspire his students’ speeches and writing. He enjoys playing chess, regularly challenging his students to matches that mirror the strategy and foresight found in debate. When he’s not teaching, you’ll often find him outdoors walking his poodle, Buttercup, or exploring new places and cultures with the same curiosity he brings to the classroom.
